Smoking Conflict Resolution through Nudge Design

Conflict Resolution ·Care · Coexistence · Nudge
Public smoking generates social conflict between smokers and non-smokers. Punitive policies (fines, restricted zones) have proven insufficient, often driving smoking underground and increasing illicit behavior rather than resolving tensions.
Behavioral observation of smoking patterns and secondhand smoke exposure pathways, followed by nudge-based spatial design. Semi-open smoking spaces with shade, ashtrays, and ventilation; visual nudges (floor graphics, guidance lines); olfactory nudges (fragrance barriers); and wayfinding to nearest designated areas.
Rather than framing smokers as adversaries, the project guides them to appropriate locations through design rather than regulation. This “care over conflict” approach creates mutual respect between smokers and non-smokers, achieving coexistence through spatial mediation.

Reduced unauthorized smoking rates in pilot zones. Increased designated area usage. Decreased secondhand smoke exposure frequency. Reduced smoking-related civil complaints.
